THE HISTORY OF GUA SHA FACIAL MASSAGE

Gua sha massage is one of the oldest types of massage. In the Paleolithic era – tens of thousands of years ago – it was already common for patients to be massaged with various stones in the hope of aiding healing. The technique then evolved into its current form throughout China's history: there is evidence that it was used for medicinal purposes 700 years ago.

The term "gua sha" consists of two parts. "Gua" means to scrape or scratch, and "sha" refers to sand or redness of the skin. Together, the two words signify the scraping away of illness, precisely the technique that humanity has been using for millennia.

HOW DOES THE MASSAGE WORK?

THE GUA SHA STONE

During the massage, the masseur typically uses a specially shaped, flat stone. The different curves ensure a comfortable grip and guarantee that the stone can follow the contours of the face painlessly. Thanks to this, a full face massage is possible during the procedure. Gua sha stones can be made from various materials, but the most common ones are different minerals and crystals.

PROCEDURE OF FACIAL MASSAGE

During gua sha facial massage, the masseur first applies oil to the face. Although the used stone is finely polished, this step ensures that the procedure focuses on stimulating deeper layers – including blood and lymph circulation – rather than scraping the surface layer of the skin.

Afterward, using initially long, smoothing, and later smaller, scraping motions, the masseur stimulates the specific area. Starting from the center of the face, moving outward, and then along the edge of the face toward the neck, the masseur stimulates various circulatory systems, aids in the flow of stagnant lymph, and reduces swelling.

After the massage, it is recommended to keep the skin warm for a while to allow it to settle. In addition, moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products applied at this time may be noticeably more effective.

However, these side effects do not occur in every case and do not affect the effectiveness of the facial massage.
